Grid Designs

Grid charts or graph patterns are suitable for crocheting and knitting. They are a simple and effective way of representing a more complicated pattern in a separate graph.

You can use them with colours or with symbols, in different techniques.

Furthermore, if you want to create your chart, you can use a special graph paper designed by Punto Art Design.

Grid designs are a simple and effective way of representing a more complicated pattern. You can use them for knittingcrocheting or making macrame.

There are 4 types of grids.

Choose the most appropriate according to the technique you want to use.

FLAT Right Side

Start from the right side. Work right and wrong side.

FLAT Wrong Side

Start from the wrong side. Work wrong and right side.

Circular

Right side. Each row starts on the same side. Work only right side.

Corner to corner (C2C)

Each row is diagonal. Work right and wrong side.

You can use them to:

Crochet with colours: Fair-Isle; Corner to corner, C2C; Tapestry; Graphgan; Mosaic;

Crochet with symbols: Filet; Bubbles;

Knitting with colours: Fair-Isle; Intarsia; Mosaic

Knitting with symbols: Lace; Aran; Cables;

Macrame. Coloured knots.

How to Read a Grid Pattern?

grid pattern can be intimidating at first. But if you follow it step by step, it is much easier to read than written instructions.

Depending on the technique, a square can have a different meaning. However, there are a few things that are general to all methods.

Each square represents a single stitch or a group of stitches.

Read the grid from the bottom up and right to the left or left to right.

Different coloured squares indicate colour or stitch changes, depending on the technique.

There are two ways to work a grid pattern

Rows

When working in rows, you must turn the work at the end of each row.

Read the odd rows from right to left and the even rows from left to right.

Use the FLAT Right Side grid.

But if you are left-handed or want to flip the designodd rows are read from left to right, and even rows, are read from right to left.

Use the FLAT Wrong Side grid.

TIP: use a stitch marker to identify the right side.

Corner to corner is a crochet technique that works just as it sounds. You crochet little tiles at a diagonal, increasing each row by one tile until your project is tall and wide enough, at which point you start decreasing each row.

Each square represents a set of stitches called a block, mosaic or tile.

Use the C2C grid.

Use the C2C grid.

Rounds

In circular work, the rows become rounds.

By working in rounds, whether joining the first and last stitches on a row or working in a spiral, you no longer have to turn. So now, all the rows are rounds, and you only have to work from the right side. Read the odd and even rows from right to left.

Use the CIRCULAR grid.

TIP: You need to mark the end of each round with a stitch marker.

Graph Paper

Adapt, modify and create your designs with graph paper.

The PDF file contains 4 different chart sheets with grids stitches x rows. Ratio (1:1) square.

  1. FLAT Right Side. Start from the right side. Work right and wrong side.
  2. FLAT Wrong Side. Start from the wrong side. Work wrong and right side.
  3. Circular. Right side. Each row starts on the same side. Work only right side.
  4. Corner to corner (C2C). Each row is diagonal. Work right and wrong side.

You can use it to:

  • Crochet with colours: Fair-Isle; Corner to corner, C2C; Tapestry; Graphgan; Mosaic;
  • Crochet with symbols: Filet; Bubbles;
  • Knitting with colours: Fair-Isle; Intarsia; Mosaic
  • Knitting with symbols: Lace; Aran; Cables;
